For most of us, the summer slowdown within our business is inevitable. And although it can rattle anxiety and fear, it can also be a time to re-evaluate your law practice and consider what changes can be made to grow your business.

Internal and external factors will determine how we respond to a business slowdown, but our goal is to provide you with tools so you can come out stronger on the other side. Some things to consider during this time: enjoy the slow down and use it to create balance, build your great team, focus on new clients, and take advantage of educational classes.

Enjoy this time: This part can be the hardest because, as an attorney, you are focused on working hard and dedicating all of your time and energy into creating a superior law practice. Believe it or not, you can enjoy seasonal downtime and still have a profitable business. Here at Atticus, we stress Great Practice. Great Life. which is defined through balance and taking time off. Downtime is necessary to re-energize and re-evaluate. And when it comes to a seasonal slow down, this is just a temporary situation. If you are going through a slow period, consider taking time off and spending it with your family or friends, or focus on one of the tips below. Recharge your batteries and enjoy this time before things pick back up again.

Build a great team: Take a look at your current team. Are you happy with how things are running in your law firm? Have you created a team that is trustworthy and can be delegated to? If not, now is the time to reconsider the direction of your business. If there are employees that need additional training, take this downtime to ensure that everyone has the resources and tools they need to succeed. It is also important to ask your staff how they are doing. Is there anything they need? Be transparent with them as you navigate through this time period.

Focus on new clients: Consider reaching out to new clients. Make sure that your website works as it should so clients can easily read about you and your services. If you haven’t created a social media strategy, use this time to prioritize your online presence. By doing this, you are making sure that new clients and referrals can find you online, read reviews, and easily pay invoices. Focus on new clients to create trust and strengthen client relationships.

Take advantage of educational classes: Downtime is the perfect time to freshen up on new material, revisit continuing CLE education, or read business or legal books. Here at Atticus, we offer free webinars, virtual workshops, and free resources to assist with legal coaching and education for lawyers.

With summer a little over a month away, it’s important to prepare for ups and downs in your firm. By planning ahead, you can create a strategy around your slowdown to help prevent stress that comes with unsteady revenue, productivity and it prepares you for the future of your law firm.
