It may seem impossible to move ahead when you have a busy schedule and many responsibilities. There is never enough time or hours in the day to work on your business. You’d love to regain control over your schedule and daily activities.

The ability to choose the clients and cases you accept can help you develop a successful firm. Even though it isn’t part of the law school curriculum, developing your marketing and branding skills can help you build the successful law firm of your dreams.

Brenda Geiger uses her sharp marketing acumen to further her career and practice. Her Carlsbad, California-based practice, Geiger Law, specializes primarily in estate planning and management. Brenda has always loved to write and is a pro at using her books as promotional tools. Although Brenda has a busy schedule as a business owner, lawyer, wife, and mother, she makes time for writing every week.

Through her love of writing, Brenda discovered endless marketing possibilities. From events to gifts to repurposing content from her books to use as blog posts, her publications opened her eyes to all the ways she could direct attention to her firm. Because she uses so much of her writing as a marketing device, she devotes one hour a week to her craft. That time is non-negotiable.

While a marketing event for a law firm might sound dull at first, Brenda’s events are anything but. She loves to set up events for her referral sources, like private wine tastings and exclusive theater showings of new movies. She even once hosted a party featuring muscle cars.

She is also careful to script her life around her priorities. Brenda’s daughter is a varsity soccer player, and it’s important to her that she attends all of those games. As a result, her calendar is structured with blocks of time for client meetings, writing, and soccer games. Brenda’s schedule doesn’t control her. Instead, she manages her schedule.

Brenda discusses how she became an attorney, built a marketing machine around the books she wrote, and the part her team plays in creating and updating her books in this episode. She also explains why she prefers writing as a marketing strategy.
